Student Challenge: 100 Pushups

Ok, we have a friendly challenge here in the Parsippany dojang. Any student of either school is welcome to participate at any time. The goal is to see which students can reach 100 perfect form pushups. Details of the program can be found here, at HundredPushups.com. It is a 6 week program. You do pushups every OTHER day. At the beginning, and twice in between, you will additionally perform an exhaustion test by doing as many pushups as you can.

Below is the student progress chart. Please note the proper pushup format: body is straight, nothing but hands and feet touch the floor. The count is in the UP position, so, start in the UP position.

If you want to start, use the results link and tell me you want to start. Or, tell me during class that you want to start.

Within a day, your name and your instructions will appear on this site. All you have to do is tell me, via the link that you followed the instructions, then I will update the chart with your new instructions. THAT'S IT!

Use this link to send me the results. Note that when the instructions look like "6, 6, 4, 4, > 5", that means, you will do 6 pushups, wait, do 6 pushups, wait, do 4 pushups, wait, do 4 pushups, wait, then do as many pushups as you can (but do at least 5). Your wait time is anywhere between 1 to 2 minutes. If you want to follow the program exactly, then use the notes to see where you are in the program, and compare to the program details.

In case you are wondering, Casper Lau did 50 perfect-form pushups AFTER he completed week-2-day-2.

Although Mr Jennings only did 30 at the time Casper did 50, he's betting he'll reach 100 before Casper.

Sabumnim is putting up a trophy for the first to reach 100.

M Lau 10, 12, 7, 7, >9 column 3; week 1; day 1
J Hwang 10, 12, 7, 7, >9 column 3; week 1; day 1

A note about the exhaustion test:

Give about 1-2 days rest after your last day in week 2 and week 4. Do the exhaustion test, then wait 1-2 days before you begin day 1 of week 3 and week 5.

An exhaustion test consists of seeing how many perfect form pushups you can do at one time. It is most important that you do as much as humanely possible (remember! perfect form!). This not only gauges you for how many you can do, but also, will help establish what column you will use for the next two weeks.

A note about pushups:

If you want to build muscle, do them slowly. If you want to build stamina and speed, do them faster. Neither method is better than the other, it all depends on your objectives. Most martial artists prefer stamina and speed, since more muscle mass means more energy used to throw hand techniques.
